Be Verbs

Be verbs are verbs that indicate a state of being or existence. They are am, are, is, was, were, been and being.

For example:

  • I am a teacher. (present simple)
  • She was happy. (past simple)
  • They have been to Paris. (present perfect)
  • He is being rude. (present continuous)

Be verbs can also be used as auxiliary verbs to help form other tenses or as linking verbs to connect the subject with more information.

For example:

  • She is studying hard. (present continuous with be as an auxiliary verb)
  • He was born in Japan. (passive voice with be as an auxiliary verb)
  • The sky is blue. (linking verb with be)
