Elision in English

Elision is when a sound disappears in natural speech.

Speakers drop sounds to talk faster and more smoothly. It’s a normal part of connected speech, not “bad pronunciation.” Native speakers do this all the time.

Definition:
👉 Elision = leaving out a sound that exists in the spelling

🧠 Why Does Elision Happen?

English speech is about speed, rhythm, and comfort. Some sound combinations are hard to say quickly, so the mouth “skips” a sound.

Without elision:

next day

With elision:

nex day

The /t/ disappears.

1️⃣ T and D Elision (VERY COMMON)

The most common sounds that disappear are /t/ and /d/, especially when they are between other consonants.

Structure:

Consonant + T/D + Consonant → T or D disappears

WrittenNatural Speech
next daynex day
first prizefirs prize
just nowjus now
friend shipfren ship
old manol man
handbaghambag

Example Sentence:

“I saw her last night.”
Spoken → I saw her las night

The t in last disappears.

2️⃣ Elision in Consonant Clusters

When many consonants are together, English often removes one.

WrittenSpoken
actsax
monthsmons
sixthsix
scriptsscrips
guestsgues

These are hard to pronounce clearly, so one sound drops.

3️⃣ Elision in Fast Phrases

Common everyday expressions often lose sounds.

WrittenSpoken
want towanna
going togonna
have tohafta
let melemme
give megimme
don’t knowdunno

Example:
“I’m going to eat.”
I’m gonna eat

Technically sounds are reduced or removed.

4️⃣ Elision of /h/

The h sound often disappears in small words.

WrittenSpoken
tell himtel im
give hergiv er
ask himask im
should haveshoulda

Example:
“Tell him later.”
Tel im later

The h in him is gone.

5️⃣ Elision in “-ed” Endings

Past tense -ed sounds can disappear in clusters.

WrittenSpoken
walked pastwalk pas
finished schoolfinish school
asked Tomask Tom

The /t/ or /d/ is dropped.

6️⃣ Elision in Everyday Sentences

Let’s see full sentences:

Normal

I must go now.

With Elision

I mus go now.

Normal

She asked me.

Spoken

She ask me.

Normal

He stopped playing.

Spoken

He stop playin.

🎧 Why Elision Matters for Listening

If you expect every sound, listening feels impossible.

You hear:

“Nex week I’m gonna go.”

But you learned:

next week I am going to go

Understanding elision helps you hear real English, not textbook English.

🗣 Why You Should Use Elision

Using a little elision:
✅ Makes you sound natural
✅ Improves rhythm
✅ Helps you speak faster
❌ But don’t overdo it in formal speech

🏋️ How to Practice

1. Slow → Natural

Say both versions:

next day
next day → nex day

2. Listen to Movies / YouTube

Notice missing sounds.

3. Practice Clusters

Try saying:

  • months
  • acts
  • sixth

Then say them fast.

🔑 Key Idea

English speech removes sounds to make speaking easier.
That’s elision.

Without elision:

I want to ask him.

Natural:

I wanna ask im.
