Giving Directions

Giving directions is a useful skill when you want to help someone find a place or guide them to a destination. There are some common words and phrases that you can use to give directions in English.

Some of the words and phrases are:

  • left, right, straight, ahead, back, along, across, past, next to, in front of, behind, opposite, between, around, corner, street, road, avenue, boulevard, highway, bridge, tunnel, roundabout, crossroads, traffic lights, signpost, landmark, etc.

For example:

  • Turn left at the next corner.
  • Go straight ahead for two blocks.
  • Cross the bridge and then turn right.
  • The museum is next to the park.
  • The bank is in front of the post office.
  • The subway station is behind the hotel.
  • The library is opposite the school.
  • The supermarket is between the pharmacy and the bakery.
  • Go around the roundabout and take the third exit.
  • At the crossroads, follow the signpost for the airport.
  • The cinema is a landmark in this area.

You can also use prepositions and adverbs to give more details about the location or direction of a place. Some of them are:

  • on, in, at, near, far, from, to, towards, away from, up, down, along, through, over, under, etc.

For example:

  • The restaurant is on Main Street.
  • The hospital is in the city center.
  • The bus stop is at the end of the road.
  • The park is near the river.
  • The mall is far from here.
  • The train station is from here to there.
  • The airport is towards the north.
  • The school is away from the highway.
  • The church is up the hill.
  • The beach is down the hill.
  • Go along this road until you see a blue building.
  • Go through the tunnel and then turn left.
  • Go over the bridge and then turn right.
  • Go under the bridge and then turn left.
  • Go past the cinema and then turn right.
