Play, Do, Go

How to use play, do and go with different verbs. These verbs are used with sports and activities in different ways.

  • Play is used with ball sports or competitive games where we play against another person or a team. For example, we can say: I play tennis, She plays chess, They play soccer.
  • Do is used for a recreational activity or a non-team sport that does not use a ball. For example, we can say: He does yoga, She does karate, They do gymnastics.
  • Go is used with activities that end in -ing. We go somewhere to do something. For example, we can say: I go swimming, She goes hiking, They go camping.
