1. “I” — Subject Pronoun
I is a subject pronoun. We use I when the speaker is the person doing the action.
Examples:
- I like coffee.
- I live in Japan.
- I play tennis.
- I study English.
- I went to Tokyo yesterday.
In these sentences, I is doing the action:
I study English.
→ Who studies English? I do.
I ate breakfast.
→ Who ate breakfast? I did.
Remember:
I = the person doing the action
I with another person
When you are talking about yourself and another person, I is still used when the two people are the subjects.
- John and I went shopping.
- My brother and I play basketball.
- Sarah and I are students.
A common mistake is:
❌ Me and John went shopping.
Better:
✅ John and I went shopping.
2. “Me” — Object Pronoun
Me is an object pronoun. We use me when someone or something is doing an action to me, or when I am the object of a verb or preposition.
Examples:
- She called me.
- He helped me.
- They invited me.
- My teacher gave me a book.
- Can you help me?
Compare:
I called Sarah.
Sarah called me.
In the first sentence, I am doing the action.
In the second sentence, someone is doing the action to me.
“Me” after prepositions
We also use me after words such as to, for, with, from, and about.
- This present is for me.
- Come with me.
- She sent an email to me.
- He was talking about me.
- This letter is from me.
Remember:
I = subject
Me = object
3. “My” — Possessive Determiner
My shows that something belongs to or is connected with the speaker. Importantly, my must normally come before a noun.
Examples:
- This is my car.
- Where is my phone?
- I forgot my keys.
- She is my sister.
- That is my book.
Notice that my is followed by a noun:
my + noun
- my car
- my house
- my friend
- my English teacher
- my computer
You cannot normally say:
❌ This is my.
Instead, if the noun is understood, use mine:
✅ This is mine.
Compare:
This is my book.
This book is mine.
Both sentences show possession, but they have different structures.
My + noun
Mine = possession without a noun
4. “Mine” — Possessive Pronoun
Mine is a possessive pronoun. It tells us that something belongs to the speaker. Unlike my, it can stand alone and is not followed by a noun.
Examples:
- This book is mine.
- That car is mine.
- The blue bag is mine.
- Is this pen mine?
- The decision was mine.
Compare these sentences:
This is my phone.
This phone is mine.
That is my seat.
That seat is mine.
This is my house.
This house is mine.
A useful rule is:
My + noun
Mine — no noun after it
Comparing All Four
Here is a simple way to remember the difference:
| Word | Grammar | Example |
|---|---|---|
| I | Subject | I like English. |
| me | Object | She helped me. |
| my | Possessive determiner | This is my book. |
| mine | Possessive pronoun | This book is mine. |
Consider this short conversation:
Tom: Who wants some coffee?
Sarah: I do.
Tom: Can you make some for me?
Sarah: Sure. Is this your coffee?
Tom: No, it’s mine.
Sarah: Oh, sorry. I thought it was my coffee.
Notice how the four words have different functions.
Common Mistakes
Mistake 1
❌ Me like basketball.
✅ I like basketball.
The speaker is doing the action, so use I.
Mistake 2
❌ She gave the book to I.
✅ She gave the book to me.
The book is being given to me, so use me.
Mistake 3
❌ This is mine book.
✅ This is my book.
Use my before a noun.
Mistake 4
❌ This book is my.
✅ This book is mine.
There is no noun after mine, so use mine here.
An Easy Memory Trick
Think of the four words as two pairs:
I → me
my → mine
The first pair is about people and actions:
- I do something.
- Someone does something to me.
The second pair is about possession:
- my book
- The book is mine.
If you remember these four patterns, you will avoid most mistakes:
I + verb
I work here.
verb + me
She called me.
my + noun
My car is outside.
mine by itself
The car is mine.
1. 「I」― 主語
I は「主語」として使います。
つまり、I は動作をする人を表します。
例:
- I like coffee.
→ 私はコーヒーが好きです。 - I live in Japan.
→ 私は日本に住んでいます。 - I play tennis.
→ 私はテニスをします。 - I study English.
→ 私は英語を勉強します。 - I went to Tokyo yesterday.
→ 私は昨日、東京へ行きました。
これらの文では、すべて I が動作をしています。
I study English.
私は英語を勉強します。
「誰が英語を勉強しますか?」
→ I(私)です。
覚え方:
I = 動作をする人
他の人と一緒に使う場合
自分と他の人について話すときも、主語なら I を使います。
- John and I went shopping.
→ ジョンと私は買い物に行きました。 - My brother and I play basketball.
→ 私の兄(弟)と私はバスケットボールをします。 - Sarah and I are students.
→ サラと私は学生です。
よくある間違い:
❌ Me and John went shopping.
正しくは:
✅ John and I went shopping.
主語なので I を使います。
2. 「Me」― 目的語
Me は「目的語」として使います。
つまり、誰かが私に対して何かをする場合などに使います。
例:
- She called me.
→ 彼女は私に電話しました。 - He helped me.
→ 彼は私を助けました。 - They invited me.
→ 彼らは私を招待しました。 - My teacher gave me a book.
→ 私の先生は私に本をくれました。 - Can you help me?
→ 私を助けてもらえますか?
次の2つを比べてみましょう。
I called Sarah.
私はサラに電話しました。
Sarah called me.
サラは私に電話しました。
最初の文では、I が動作をしています。
2番目の文では、サラが私に対して動作をしています。
つまり:
I = 動作をする人
me = 動作を受ける人
前置詞の後の「me」
to、for、with、from、about などの前置詞の後にも me を使います。
- This present is for me.
→ このプレゼントは私のためです。 - Come with me.
→ 私と一緒に来てください。 - She sent an email to me.
→ 彼女は私にメールを送りました。 - He was talking about me.
→ 彼は私について話していました。 - This letter is from me.
→ この手紙は私からです。
覚え方:
I = 主語
Me = 目的語
3. 「My」― 所有を表す言葉
My は「私の」という意味で、何かが自分のものであることを表します。
重要なのは、通常 my の後ろには名詞が必要だということです。
例:
- This is my car.
→ これは私の車です。 - Where is my phone?
→ 私の携帯電話はどこですか? - I forgot my keys.
→ 私は鍵を忘れました。 - She is my sister.
→ 彼女は私の姉(妹)です。 - That is my book.
→ あれは私の本です。
このように、
my + 名詞
という形になります。
例:
- my car
→ 私の車 - my house
→ 私の家 - my friend
→ 私の友達 - my English teacher
→ 私の英語の先生 - my computer
→ 私のコンピューター
通常、次のようには言いません。
❌ This is my.
「これは私のものです」と言いたい場合は、mine を使います。
✅ This is mine.
次の2つを比べてください。
This is my book.
これは私の本です。
This book is mine.
この本は私のものです。
どちらも「所有」を表していますが、文の形が違います。
my + 名詞
mine = 名詞なしで「私のもの」
4. 「Mine」― 所有代名詞
Mine は「私のもの」という意味です。
my と違って、通常 mine の後ろには名詞を置きません。
例:
- This book is mine.
→ この本は私のものです。 - That car is mine.
→ あの車は私のものです。 - The blue bag is mine.
→ 青いバッグは私のものです。 - Is this pen mine?
→ このペンは私のものですか? - The decision was mine.
→ その決定は私がしたものです。
次の文を比べましょう。
This is my phone.
これは私の携帯電話です。
This phone is mine.
この携帯電話は私のものです。
また、
That is my seat.
それは私の席です。
That seat is mine.
その席は私のものです。
そして、
This is my house.
これは私の家です。
This house is mine.
この家は私のものです。
覚え方:
My + 名詞
Mine = 名詞なし

よくある間違い
間違い1
❌ Me like basketball.
✅ I like basketball.
「私」が「バスケットボールが好き」という動作・状態の主語なので、I を使います。
間違い2
❌ She gave the book to I.
✅ She gave the book to me.
「私に本をあげた」という意味なので、to の後には me を使います。
間違い3
❌ This is mine book.
✅ This is my book.
book という名詞が後ろにあるので、my を使います。
my + book
間違い4
❌ This book is my.
✅ This book is mine.
ここでは my の後ろに名詞がありません。
そのため、mine を使います。
